Code of Conduct

Godson Students are:

  • Safe
  • Responsible
  • Nice

The Code of Conduct is established to maintain safe, caring and orderly environment where all children can learn.

Students are responsible for respecting the rights and dignity of others in learning environments free from discrimination as set out in the B.C. Human Rights’ Code and becoming actively and productively involved in their own academic learning and social growth.

Acceptable behaviour is:
• Keep your hands and feet to yourself
• Be honest and forthright
• Treat yourself and others with respect and courtesy
• Respect the property of others and demonstrate care of the school environment (no littering, etc)
• Help make the school a safe, caring and orderly place
• Inform an adult of any unsafe behaviour
• Work to the best of your abilities
• Encourage self and others to participate in class and school activities
• Attend regularly and punctually

Unacceptable behaviour is:
• Interferes with learning of others
• Interferes with an orderly environment
• Creates unsafe conditions
• Bullying, harassment or intimidation
• Physical violence
• Retribution against a person who has reported something to an adult
• Having or sharing an illegal or restricted substance:  alcohol, tobacco…
• Having or using a weapon
• Stealing or damaging property
• Racism

Rising Expectations:  At Godson Elementary, we believe that as children become older, more mature and move through the successive grades, we expect increasing responsibility and self-discipline from them.  Consequences for inappropriate behaviour will increase with age.  Also, special considerations may apply to students with special needs who are unable to comply with expectations due to having a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature.

Disciplinary Process:  When a student chooses actions detrimental to him/herself or the school community, he/she will face a series of consequences.  Minor offences are handled “on the spot” by any staff member or lunchtime supervisors.  Students will know what was poor judgment on their part and will be helped to formulate more acceptable alternatives for the future.  The principal or vice-principal will deal with major offences.  Major offences are conduct which interferes with or threatens the orderly function of the school or classroom; or which adversely affects the well being of others; or conduct which is injurious to the safety or dignity of students or staff.  However, whenever possible and appropriate, consequences for breaches of code of conduct are restorative, rather than punitive in nature.

Notification:  The classroom teacher handles most issues arising from classroom behaviour.  Issues are referred to the principal if consultation with the parent has not succeeded in altering the behaviour.  The principal or vice-principal will advise parties of serious or continuous breaches of the Code of Conduct.  For example:

• Parents of student offenders
• Parents of the student victim
• School district officials (as required by Abbotsford School District Policy)
• Police and/or other agencies (as required)
• All parents  (when deemed to be important to reassure members of the school community that school officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate action to address it)
